As more states begin to legalize medical marijuana, many research companies are taking a second look at marijuana and the compounds found within it. Researchers at Tel Aviv University’s Sackler Facility of Medicine have found that cannabidiol, CBD, can help with the regeneration of bone fractures. The rodents used for the study are the same ones used for osteoporosis research. While nothing was found to be certain with these results as far as helping humans, it does show incredible potential. How It Works

The human body naturally produces a compound called endocannabinoids. These are attracted to the cannabinoid receptors throughout the body. Most people believe that these receptors are only within the brain, but this is not true. Cannabinoid receptors have already been proven to an important part of stimulating bone formation.

The rodent subjects that got injected with the CBD compound had stronger cartilage “bridge”. This bridge is what forms over the broken or fractured boned and then hardens into new bone. The collagen molecules were more tightly formed in the rodents treated with marijuana than the ones that were not. The result was a bone that healed not only quicker, but was also anywhere from 35 to 50% stronger.
